The energy sector is becoming more service-oriented and real-time. Because customers are cost-conscious, the value of energy needs to be transparent, in terms of costs and production methods, all the way to the end customer. For example, power generation is based on relatively expensive methods during cold weather.
To respond to a changing operating environment and customer expectations, Suur-Savon Sähkö was seeking a tool that would enable the planning and analysis of energy tariffs with greater precision. Transparent pricing would improve the customer’s understanding of how energy costs are formed and provide consumers with more opportunities to control such costs.
Affecto served Suur-Savon Sähkö with a tool which enabled it to simulate and analyse current tariffs and build scenarios for new ones. Data is modelled by point of consumption. This means that the model can be used for analysis at the general level, tariff level, by area and by individual point of consumption.
The tool has been developed as a cloud service to which the customer can upload meter, contract and price data. The current tariffs were modelled for reference and new algorithms were modelled to compute data based on the new tariffs. Various visual analyses and simulations can be created from the data and provide an intuitive basis for decision-making.
Suur-Savon Sähkö was delighted with the reporting done using the Tableau reporting tool. “This is truly visual and easy to use,” says Mika Laine, Production Manager at Suur-Savon Sähkö. From downloads, the tool can also be scaled up to support everyday, more detailed analysis of customers and consumption: the first ideas are already in the pipeline.
The simulation tool was a very light project. The tool was ready just a few weeks after the project kicked off and the results were iterated on a weekly basis alongside the customer. Due to its speed of completion, the project brought added value to tariff planning and revenue forecasting, and is now of huge help in weighing up various options.
Affecto’s tariff planning and revenue forecasting tool in a nutshell:
- Upload the necessary information to the cloud service (data export from existing systems)
- Upload old and new algorithms to the service as a model
- Perform an analysis and visualise the results
- Analyse and model
