Mutual & Federal is one of the oldest insurance companies in South Africa with a history that dates back more than 180 years. It is also one of the leading short-term insurers in southern Africa’s insurance market with a products for personal, commercial and corporate segments. Mutual & Federal is fully owned by the Old Mutual group and it operates within a wide network of branches located in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Since 1982 Mutual & Federal was using the Mainframe legacy system. During the years, M&F required an IT system that is flexible, adaptable, cost effective and able to grow as business grows. Mainframe application could not support these business needs anymore due to outdated technology and exaggerated maintenance costs. In order to achieve strategic business goals, M&F needed make some changes in IT. In 2006 decision was made to migrate business portfolio to a more convenient IT platform. From the multiple options available in the market, client chose to implement TIA (The insurance application). TIA platform is a global and one of the world’s leading insurance software solutions.
Partnership with Affecto
After a decision was made to implement TIA platform, Mutual & Federal was looking for a reliable partner which could assist with the implementation of the Programme of such scale. Affecto was chosen because it had a number of successful TIA implementations across the world, deep understanding about the TIA application and a large pool of dedicated resources.
Programme Stage 1
Programme scope was enormously big and it was divided into multiple stages. First stage was to migrate and transform client personal insurance portfolio from Mainframe system into TIA. All affected client business processes were reviewed, improved, mapped into the new TIA platform, developed, tested and successfully delivered. In addition, all of the customer base was migrated into TIA which allowed the client to continuously perform business activities without affecting existing customers. TIA platform was made available to perform Mutual & Federal business in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. One of the biggest challenges was to adopt the TIA platform to the country specific insurance regulations and business needs. This was achieved by working together and combining expertise of Affecto consultants and client business representatives. Implementation was done on TIA version 5.2.
Programme Stage 2
Next stage of the Programme was to transform and migrate into TIA remaining client portfolio including commercial, corporate, marine, engineering and agriculture business lines. In addition to that the whole sophisticated Reinsurance module was implemented and adopted to the business needs. At the same time, TIA was upgraded from version 5.2 to 6.3. Client business also expanded into Nigeria where the TIA platform is also used.

All the business portfolio is available in TIA platform and client is able to perform all the required business activities on the new platform. Following are the main benefits client received after implementation:

The main Programme goal was achieved in 2015 and the old Mainframe legacy system was switched off. Numerous Affecto resources with wide areas of expertise where involved during this implementation. It included Business consultants, Developers, Testers, Project and Programme Managers. A big number of Affecto resources were consulting the client onsite while Offshore Delivery Power House was used to cover most of the development requirements. This allowed for a significant cut on the costs for the Programme of such scale.
