Affecto helped Louis Poulsen Lighting achieve otherwise elusive success with planning and consolidation. In-depth knowledge made the difference. No technology is worth much if it is not implemented with a high degree of understanding of the processes the technology is supposed to facilitate.
When Louis Poulsen Lighting A/S, a Danish manufacturer of high end lighting products sold across the world, updated its ERP system, it was also decided to invest in a Business Planning and Consolidation solution as well as a BI solution. However, Louis Poulsen Lighting’s planning and budgeting process did not become any easier. Neither did the sales analysis tools work in a satisfying way. At least not right away, explains Finance Director Allan Clausen:
“It didn’t work. Implementation was done several places at a time by different people and the end result was anything but coherent. We simply couldn’t trust the numbers. It was also apparent that something was fundamentally wrong with overall system performance, but we didn’t know what or why.”
The problems were so ubiquitous that Allan Clausen together with the rest of the company’s group management team considered scrapping the solution entirely and start over again – or forget about streamlining budgeting, planning and BI analysis of sales and products.
Then a conversation and a subsequent workshop focusing on BPC turned things upside down and made Allan Clausen and his team of controllers and bookkeepers believe there were advantages to be gained from their solution.
“We had a conversation with Affecto. They persuaded us to let them have a go at a three-day workshop and see what they could do. After the workshop we were convinced and decided to move forward together with Affecto,” says Allan Clausen.
Completing in a fraction of time
The Affecto workshop consisted partly of an in-depth system review and partly of assessing and understanding Louis Poulsen Lighting’s specific needs and challenges. Among the questions to be answered were: What kinds of reports are needed? By whom? What data makes sense for each recipient? How can reports be tailored to suit these different needs, now and in the future?
With the help of Affecto, Louis Poulsen Lighting has eventually achieved their goal: A swift and streamlined planning process:
“We are very happy with the way the solution works now. Before, forecasting and planning was a very tiresome and time consuming process, but now we are completing it in a fraction of the time it took us before. Overall system performance is much better, and we are able to build new reports without having to call in external specialists,” Allan Clausen says.
Return on investment
He is quite satisfied working with Affecto:
“I must say we have had a very positive and enriching collaboration with Affecto. Their people demonstrate great abilities in understanding our business, our needs, and come up with solutions that create actual value for us. They helped us discover opportunities and successfully pursue them. And, not least, they helped us obtain return on an investment that initially seemed to be a complete mistake.”
“That is why we have now decided to take one more step towards Business Intelligence together with Affecto. Now that we have reached the first goal, we will be looking into what we can achieve with Dashboards, Explorer and Infoview in BusinessObjects 4.0. The objective is to obtain full value from our investment in the entire SAP BI solution for performance management,” says Allan Clausen.
